A gas compliance certificate is the document a licensed gasfitter issues to confirm that a gas installation or alteration meets Queensland requirements. Its formal name in Queensland is the gas system compliance certificate. The gasfitter issues it through the state's gas licensing portal, managed by Resources Safety and Health Queensland, when the work is finished. If you own, rent, buy or sell a home with LPG in Mackay, it helps to know when a certificate is required, what it does and does not prove, and how to get one for a system that has none on record.
When Queensland requires a certificate
According to Queensland government guidance for gas work licence holders, after completing a gas system installation or alteration the gasfitter must:
- give a gas system compliance certificate to the owner immediately on completion;
- send a copy to the network operator within five days, if the system is supplied with gas through a distribution system or fuel gas network.
So a certificate is linked to a specific piece of work, such as a new installation, an added appliance, or changed pipework. It is not a general annual safety certificate. Queensland does not currently set a routine periodic gas safety inspection for homes in the way some other jurisdictions do for certain rentals. Check current rules before you rely on that, because regulations change.
Since July 2025, most installations no longer need the physical compliance plates that were once fitted near the meter or cylinders. Caravans are the main exception.
Defect notices and inspection certificates
Two related documents are sometimes confused with compliance certificates:
| Document | When it is issued |
|---|---|
| Gas system compliance certificate | After a gas installation or alteration is completed and found to be compliant |
| Defect notice | When a gasfitter has a safety concern about a gas system they are working on and does not fix it immediately |
| Gas system inspection certificate | After inspecting, altering or installing part of a gas fuel system in a vehicle, vessel or stationary engine |
If you receive a defect notice, take it seriously. It means a licensed gasfitter found a problem that needs fixing.
Common reasons people look for a certificate
Buying or selling a home
Buyers, conveyancers and building inspectors sometimes ask for certificates covering gas appliances and pipework. A seller who cannot find one may choose to have the system inspected so any problems can be fixed and certified before settlement.
Renting a property
Property managers often keep certificates on file, and a new tenant may ask to see them. Owners have to keep rental properties safe and in good repair, and gas leaks count as emergency repairs. Having current documentation makes conversations with tenants and insurers easier.
Renovations and new appliances
Any time a gasfitter adds an appliance, moves a line or changes the regulator setup, a new certificate should follow. See gas appliance installation and LPG gas bottle connection.
Insurance claims
After a fire or gas incident, an insurer may ask whether gas work was done by a licensed person. Having a certificate on file supports that.
What a certificate does not prove
A certificate confirms that specific work met requirements when it was done. It does not prove that:
- appliances installed later are compliant;
- hoses, regulators and fittings have not worn since then;
- someone has not altered the system without a licence;
- an appliance is still burning safely years later.
That is why periodic appliance servicing and checks for leaks still matter. For appliances that have not been looked at in years, see gas appliance servicing and repairs.
Getting paperwork for an existing system
If you have no certificate on record, a licensed gasfitter can inspect the installation. Typically they will:
- look at the cylinder setup or meter, regulator, visible pipework and appliances;
- pressure test the system for leaks;
- check that appliances are approved and burning correctly;
- fix defects, or issue a defect notice if something is unsafe and is not fixed straight away;
- issue a compliance certificate where work is carried out and certified under the rules that apply.
Exactly what paperwork can be issued for an old system without new work depends on the circumstances. Ask the provider to explain before they start what document you will receive and what it covers.
How to check a gasfitter's licence
Queensland advises asking to see a gas work licence before any gas work begins. Gas work licences are issued through the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate within Resources Safety and Health Queensland, which is separate from QBCC plumbing licences. Many tradespeople hold both. Mackay context
Because most local homes use LPG cylinders rather than mains gas, certificates often cover the cylinder bay, regulator and pipework as well as appliances. Properties that have had several owners or renovations over the years may have a mix of work from different eras. An inspection before you buy, or before you lease a property out, can uncover old work that was never certified.
Frequently asked questions
Does every gas job need a compliance certificate in Queensland?
Installations and alterations of gas systems need one. Some routine tasks, like an LPG supplier swapping cylinders, are not gas installations. If you are not sure, ask the gasfitter before work starts whether a certificate will be issued.
Do I need a gas safety certificate to rent out my Mackay property?
Queensland does not currently require a routine periodic gas safety certificate for rentals. Owners still have to keep the property safe, and many property managers ask for certificates for any gas work done. Confirm the current position with the Residential Tenancies Authority.
How quickly should I receive the certificate after the work?
Queensland guidance says the owner should receive it immediately when the installation or alteration is finished. Ask for it before the gasfitter leaves.
I lost my gas certificate. Can I get a copy?
Start with the gasfitter who did the work, because certificates are issued through the state portal. If you cannot reach them, a licensed gasfitter can inspect the system and advise what documentation is possible.
Does a compliance certificate mean my gas appliances are safe forever?
No. It covers the work at the time it was certified. Appliances and fittings wear over time, especially outdoors in coastal Mackay, so periodic servicing and leak checks are still recommended.
Request a connection with a local provider
This site is an independent referral service. It does not issue certificates or perform gas work. Tell us what the certificate is for, such as a sale, a rental or new work, and we will pass your enquiry to a licensed local provider who can explain the options.
